L'ocanda

ロカンダ

Niseko, Japan • Recommendation •

Run by two brothers, L’Ocanda serves authentic Italian cuisine made with fine local ingredients. Try the Gnocchi Tuna with Mushroom Cream Sauce for a rich, creamy dish with perfectly cooked, pillowy gnocchi. The Spaghetti with Clams, a light pasta dish made with white wine, garlic, and clams, is also a show-stopper. Pair your meal with one of their Cream Puffs to sample a local dessert or browse their selection of handmade cakes and pastries for something sweet to take home. The restaurant also whips up whole cakes for special occasions!

The Barn combines the methods of French cooking with top notch Hokkaido produce, keeping their menu simple to highlight natural flavors. Bring your kids, the Barn Original Plate under the Kids Menu is filled with classic comfort foods—fried chicken, mini hamburg steak, pancake and dessert. For the parents, I suggest you have a bottle from the owner’s Boyer-Gontard vineyard in Burgundy.

The Flying Fish

ザ フライング フィッシュ

Niseko, Japan • Recommendation •

This parked van in Hirafu elevates the English favorite fish and chips using Hokkaido’s outstanding produce. Born out of British owner Matt Stormont’s hankering for food from his birthland, Flying Fish offers the day’s catch delivered daily from the seaside town of Yoichi. Watch as each fillet is battered in English Bass Pale Ale and rice flour. The thick chips are made from Kutchan’s superb potatoes, golden outside and velvety soft inside. In true English fashion, your order is handed in a nifty newspaper package.
