Sweets After Skis

Niseko

For many, the best reward after hitting the slopes is a sweet treat at a cozy cafe. Niseko abounds with coffee shops, bakeries, and dessert places to satisfy anyone looking to end the day slowly. Check out my favorite quiet spots in town! You just might find me hidden behind a book in one of these corners.

Gloorious Coffee

グロリアスコーヒー

Niseko, Japan • Recommendation •

Get your caffeine fix with Gloorious Coffee’s premium blends! A small, unassuming stall inside Rhythm Snowsports, this café lovingly serves delicious coffee using Italian Lavazza beans. Order the Espresso to get the full taste of the premium java. For a velvety drink, we recommend the Flat White or Latte. Their Hot Chocolate is a delicious, decadent treat on cold days. Non-coffee drinkers are also welcome to sample their selection of tea. There’s no large sign marking the café, but you’ll find it on the first floor by the staircase. Tables and chairs are not available, so customers have to drink coffee while standing, or have it taken out.

Delight in lip-smacking desserts in Mariposa! Run by the husband and wife team of Yukio and Satsuki Yamamoto, this wooden cottage has a relaxing vibe great for downtime. Feel at ease with the sweet smell of freshly baked pastries and the lull of soft music that envelops visitors as soon as they walk in. Soft-spoken and well-mannered, the owners offer their yummy confections with warm, friendly service. Come early to get your hands on one of their signature Cream Puffs. While Mariposa bakes around 200 of these pastries every day, they’re almost always sold out by the afternoon. Pair your pastry with a decadent cup of Hot Chocolate or a scoop of their aromatic Black Sesame Ice Cream. During winter, they offer a nabe course dinner of Hokkaido shabu-shabu, perfect for the frigid weather.

Niseko, Japan • Recommendation •

Let the tempting smell of artisanal breads and coffee draw you into Koko. Tucked on the second floor of Odin Place, this take-away bakery is the revival of the now-defunct Niseko Supply Company. Frenchman Clement is in charge of the kitchen, preparing goods at sun-up. Drop in when they open at 7:30AM as the goods hit the shelves. Take your pick from their eye-popping display of freshly-baked breads, cakes, pastries. They also serve barista grade coffee, Belgian hot chocolates, tea, and fruit juices. Koko is set to prop up a few tables outside the store during summer, but will remain seat-less throughout winter. The ledge outside is the best spot to enjoy your food during this season.
