Kam's Roast Goose

甘牌燒鵝

Hong Kong, China • Recommendation •

Kam’s Roast Goose in Wanchai is also a small cheap Michelin starred option, great for lunch. The city is famous for its roast goose, and Yung Kee restaurant is the most famous. Kam’s Roast Goose was started by one of the family members of Yung Kee who had a falling out I believe. Lots of stories there.

Fook Lam Moon

Hong Kong, China • Recommendation •

A famous local Cantonese dining spot in Wanchai is called Fook Lam Moon. I think it’s michelin starred, not sure. But it’s a local favourite. I am not too keen on it though, as I feel the quality has gone down, and I prefer Seventh Son, also in Wanchai, which is opened by the 7th Son of the Fook Lam Moon clan. I’m not sure if a falling out happened here but sons always want to show that they can do better than their parents, and you’d see that in this case he definitely did.

Tasty Congee & Noodle Wantun Shop (Central)

正斗粥麵專家

Hong Kong, China • Recommendation •

Lots of father-son rivalries in Hong Kong that give birth to great restaurants. Amongst my frequent favourites is where I go for congee. Tasty Congee is still my favourite. They have good fried Beef Hor Fun as well. They expanded since I was little and they’re now even in IFC mall, on the 3rd floor of the airport express station in Central. That’s probably the most convenient location for you, but the original branch was in Happy Valley, and I grew up eating the congee there.

Hong Kong, China • Recommendation •

Just like any other family business, the father basically had an argument with the son who wanted to do something different. The son ended up breaking off and he opened a tiny tiny joint in causeway bay. A true hole in the wall. Cramped, hot, looked like a pauper’s joint, and got a Michelin star for it, one of the smallest Michelin starred restaurants in hk with long wait times outside and something like only 9 tables inside. You’d have to share. After getting the star though, he grew and expanded and opened a bigger more comfortable restaurant in Hysan Place in Causeway Bay on the 10th or 11th or 12th floors or something like that. Hard to miss if you ask the information desk there or check online, coz his is the only congee place in the mall.

I also like Sea View Congee Shop. It’s got great Yau Tiu and Ngao Lei Sou. Basically fried dough. I go there for that, only. The congee is not amazing. But just ordering that with a cold soy bean milk drink is good.

Fu Sing Shark Fin Seafood Restaurant (Wan Chai)

富聲魚翅海鮮酒家

Hong Kong, China • Recommendation •

Definitely go have Dim Sum at Fu Sing over the weekend! They don’t have much variety during weekdays. My favourite is the baked Char Siew Bao, the deep fried salt and pepper tofu cubes, and of course the XO sauce Cheung Fun. Hungry already...

During weekdays, go EARLY to Maxim’s Palace at City Hall, one of the city’s last remaining true push cart dim sum experiences.

Mott 32 is a swanky evening option. I booked that the first time Alex and I met! Food is delicious, and Alex revealed that Monica had taken him there just recently as well. It had just opened at the time in Hong Kong.

HAKU Curated By Hideaki Matsuo

Hong Kong, China • Recommendation •

Ugh so good 🤤 the chef is originally from Argentina, and went to Japan to work and learn Japanese food for 6 years. He knew that it would be hard as a non-Japanese to open a Japanese restaurant, so he came to hk to do it. He’s taken traditionally Japanese dishes/cooking styles and included western elements to it and the result is truly it’s own unique perfect genre. For example, instead of Ochazuke (traditionally with a miso soup base and toppings like salmon on top) he made it with an amazing chorizo and black abalone soup. Amazing.
