Memories in Florence

Florence

Before I founded Lemi, I used to scrapbook, a lot. It was the only way to keep track of all my travel adventures in any semblance of an organised way. But it was so much work, and I lost a ton of name cards and notes to decay and dust. Now that I’ve got round to clearing up my name card filled drawers, there were a few places I wanted to remember before throwing all that paper away. Here are my disorganised memories.

Buca Lapi

This was possibly one of the most incredible meals we had in Florence. It’s apparently the oldest restaurant in Florence. Order their Boar Ragu 🐗. They’re also known for their rather rare steak 🥩, grilled on the outside but just warmed on the inside. I just remember it was expensive but delicious and I must go back.

Piazza del Duomo

Every time I’ve been to Florence I’ve not bothered with the Duomo. It’s always crowded, long ticket lines, everything touristy and unpleasant that I find to be a waste of time. That is, until I was in Florence for an incredible wedding, and the couple booked out the Duomo for a scrumptious feast and private museum experience. I was floored by the architectural creativity and sheer willpower it took to complete. Later I started learning more about the many generations of the Medici family and truly understood the importance of patrons in the world of art back then, and its intersection between politics, religion, and of course the PR of it all. So much I don’t know, and so much more to learn!

Ristorante Il Profeta

When food is so good you literally have to take a picture of every dish to remember it... I’ve been back to Il Profeta without fail every single time I’m in Florence. It’s become somewhat of a habit, an itch I must scratch. I love their lobster pasta but the food there is truly delicious. They’re known for their John Travolta pasta, which is delicious as well, even though I can’t for the life of me remember what’s in it. Now I have kids, I guess I have to wait for them to grow up a bit (and for Covid to make it safer to travel) before I can visit again. Thank goodness for Lemi and travel journaling!

Most people bring clothes, shoes, bags, and fashion back from Italy. Dom and I bring back food. Shameless amounts of it. Truffles, dried pastas, olive oils and aged balsamic vinegar... and pack them in boxes 📦 and newspaper 🗞 courtesy of the hotel concierge. Overweight luggage is a real concern with all that balsamic vinegar and olive oils 😅 If you head over, go on an empty stomach. There’s plenty to eat, lots of little stalls, and your mouth will be kept pretty busy with the constant gobbling.

Antinori nel Chianti Classico

Florence, Italy • Recommendation •

A lot of love was put into the architecture and design of this winery. It’s one that all wine buffs should take the time to visit. Sign up for a tour in advance, don’t drive if you’re going to drink. But don’t expect too much of the food there and you won’t get a good deal on the wines. It costs the same here as it does retail, so you might as well buy it from a trader. But enjoy the ambience, and the story of the Antinori family who stuck to their guns to create a centuries old tradition and legacy.

For such an expensive hotel the only thing I could remember was that the breakfast was fantastic, the rooms were small, and I don’t think it was great value for money. That said, there was good service, parking, and I also remember it being a little walk away from central Florence. Oh and they had decent chocolate 🍫 and good pens 😂 🖊 only I would remember a thing like that. I have a thing for nice pens.

The Westin Excelsior, Florence

Definitely worth staying here and I’d never stay anywhere else ever again in Florence. The rooms were more spacious and the location is definitely the best. Sometimes it’s just worth the extra bucks for an amazing stress-free stay. The problem with Florence is that the rooms tend to be too tiny and it gets a little claustrophobic especially if you are doing a multi-stop Europe trip with a fair bit of luggage. Likely too, since there don’t tend to be any direct flights into Florence proper from Asia.
