Started by friends with a passion to breathe new life into lumps of clay, Wabi Sabi is all kinds of worth it. We celebrated one of my best friend’s birthdays there, and we were warmly greeted by 2 of some of the co-founders who also became our teachers that day. They even drew out a cute birthday greeting for our friend on their whiteboard. A pottery workshop with them includes a lesson on how ceramic ware is made, a historical background on Wabi Sabi, and life lessons on patience and non-attachment (sometimes your pieces will look completely different from how they started or how you imagined). You get to create 3 pieces of ceramic ware of your design choice. If you have leftover clay, you get to make more things if you want. And once the pieces have dried up, you get to decorate them with their wide selection of stamps. Throughout the session, the teachers will be very hands-on with your learning process. They will watch your form and correct you if even just one finger is in the wrong place. They also make the effort to take cute candid and posed photos of you and your friends the entire time and are not afraid to make you laugh and play whatever songs you request to be played. Once the session is over, your work will then go through a 2-3 week drying process that includes being baked in their kiln. The package also includes painting services of your work by their resident ceramic painter. The items then can be shipped to the creators. My friends and I had a fun and tiring time (pottery is a workout). We were considering getting our own pottery tables, but we thought repaying the studio a visit would be a much more fun experience.
