A Munich institution, Augustiner-Keller has been pouring liquid gold since 1812! It sells Augustiner specialty brews, which are regarded by locals as some of the best beers in the world. Try the crowd favorite Augustiner Lagerbier Hell, favored for its sharp yet refreshing flavor. The massive space boasts a keller (German for “cellar) eight meters below the ground; a festival hall alive with boisterous chatter, music from oompah bands, and the clinking of glasses; and a chestnut tree-canopied beer garden. The place dishes out delicious biergarten staples, but we recommend nibbling on the pretzels hawked by independent sellers strolling around the main level!

Along the banks of the Isar River, old chestnut trees frame the Gutshof Menterschwaige Biergarten, Munich’s most beautiful beer garden. The laid-back space invites up to 2,500 guests to enjoy regional brews on rustic picnic tables. Order a few slices of seasonal cakes or drop by the on-site crepe stand for something sweet to pair with your drink! There’s a nearby playground with a pirate ship, carousel, and climbing wall, in case you’re tot is tagging along.

Biergarten Viktualienmarkt sits in the heart of Munich’s oldest farmers markets. Beer halls and gardens customarily carry only one brand of German beer, but here, the “Big Six” (Löwenbräu, Spaten, Paulaner, Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbräu, and Augustiner) rotate every few weeks. Before settling in on a spot, peruse vendors carrying artisanal products such as cheese, meat, and bread. Feel free to bring your assortment of goodies to the table—beer garden tradition allows it!

Elevate your beer hall experience at Der Pschorr, the brewery house of Hacker-Pschorr beer. Committed to the gourmet approach, the pub serves high-quality food made with local, organic ingredients. Indulge in a feast of Bavarian favorites at the indoor restaurant or take your brew outside to the alfresco area. Better yet, duck into the downstairs parlor, where they store the handmake oakwood barrels (chilled on blocks of ice until they are tapped) that keep your beer fresh!
