Welcome to hell. That is what Haw Par Villa theme park is all about. One of its mains attractions is the Ten Courts of Hell, featuring the gruesome depictions of hell kn Buddhism. It park reopened in 2021 after closure in 2020. Other attractions include: Journey to the West, Fengsheng Bang, Legend of the White Snake, and a lot more! It is a treasured past, although one endangered of fading away due to new generation of tourists which are disinterested in statues and mythologies.

The Ten Courts of Hell display at Haw Par Villa theme park should be enough to send chills down your spine, but there’s more. Screams have reportedly been heard from the diorama exhibit after hours. This has fed the rumors that the place comes to life at night, in the literal sense. Actual human bodies are believed to be hidden under some statues. Ultimately, Haw Par Villa is said to be an actual gate to hell, answering for all the disturbing gossip. It was built as the Tiger Balm Garden, a cultural park built by the Tiger Balm moguls Aw Boon Haw and Aw Boon Par. Chinese mythology, folklore, and history is highlighted in each attraction. It seems they’ve done such a great job with the Ten Courts of Hell that it has taken on a life of its own.
Unravel the lore that colors China's rich history through dioramas like no other. Haw Par Villa’s showstopper is the Journey to Hell where the green creature, “Hu Fa Shi Zhe,” doles out punishments for the afterlife. According to Chinese lore, there are 10 courts of Hell. The first, just to whet your appetite, is for thieves and gamblers frozen in a block of ice. Each diorama at this Singaporean park goes into intricate detail, the elaborate tableaux scattered along the theme park detailing the many customs, values, and myths of the region.

As someone who grew up watching Disney shows and films, and has been to Hong Kong Disneyland multiple times, this was a brand new experience for me. The entire park is sea themed, and I personally love the Venice inspired area and the Little Mermaid area. Those two are the most memorable ones in my opinion. Overall, this is an amazing place, and I would love to go back someday.

The entire place is a wonderful place to explore, and have fun with the various attractions and rides. Every part of the theme park is fascinating on it’s own, and my personal favorite is the Harry Potter portion; although not being a huge fan of the book or the films, I do love the design of the entire place, and the butter beer is to die for.
