This list highlights some of my favourite hikes/walks in and around the UK.
Tower to spire, the Clarendon Way is a gentle two-day hike linking the historic cathedral cities of Salisbury and Winchester. It is also the hike that inspired me to start HikerHero. Winding through woodland, farmland and rolling downland, the route is a gentle introduction to the world of multi-day hiking, with great transport links from London and beyond. At 26 miles, the Clarendon Way is the same length as a marathon. But don’t worry if you’re not an experienced walker. It doesn’t require six months of sweaty training and chaffed nipples to achieve. Sure, some speedfreaks could bang it out in a day but for those new to long-distance walking (like me) this is the ideal hike to take slow and find your feet. Clarendon Way, Winchester SO21, UK
The Chess Valley Walk is a 10-mile walk through the Chilterns Hills. And if you’re looking for one of the best day hikes from London town, guess what? You’ve found it! Starting in Rickmansworth and ending in Chesham, or vice versa, the walk takes four to five hours of strolling through timeless English countryside. All within a short tube or train ride to central London. It’s an ideal hike for beginners, families, couples, and anyone looking for an escape rather than a physical challenge. The route takes in manor houses, a Roman farm villa and even watercress beds. Yep, that’s right: you get to see watercress sleeping. Lucky you! For the most part the route winds along the River Chess: so you’ll feel like a king or queen, and you definitely won’t be board. So, check it out! (Chess, get it?!)
