Dundee ( cake and more! )

Dundee

OK, my real reason for visiting Dundee is to sample the famous Dundee cake but I think I will stop by at the Victoria and Albert’s new gallery there plus anything else the city has to offer.

Tony Macaroni

Dundee, United Kingdom • Recommendation •

This is one of several Tony Macaroni restaurants in Scotland. It is very popular and rightly so, as it serves really good Italian food, far far better than the big chains such as Pizza Express. Our meal was delicious. We had starters of minestrone soup and mozzarella and prosciutto, then mains of pizza and Mediterranean risotto. The latter was the nicest risotto I have had in a restaurant. Large portions!

Went here in search of their legendary Dundee cake. Would you believe they had sold out? But was tempted by their hot Scotch pies. Really tasty comfort food which we ate next to The Discovery, the ship which took Scott to the Antarctic. Update ... returned two days later. Bought Dundee cake! Hooray. ( Must confess also bought 2 more Scotch pies)

Location, location, location Definitely where to stay in Dundee. Rooms directly overlooking the wide expanse of the River Tay. The view from our room made us feel as if we were on a ship! ( no sea sickness though) 2 minutes walk to The Discovery, 4 minutes to V and A , 4 minutes to railway station ! In picture , taken from inside the V and A, the hotel is on the right.

V&A Dundee

Dundee, United Kingdom • Recommendation •

This brand new outpost of the Victoria and Albert Museum , always known as the V and A, has been on my wish list since it opened in 2019. Now I have made it there! The building and location are absolutely stunning and a real asset to Dundee. The inside is a little sparse at the moment but great museums take time to develop. BTW like most museums in United Kingdom, it is free to enter.

This ship built in Dundee was the one Captain Scott sailed on, to the Antarctic in 1901. Very very interesting polar museum followed by wander round inside and outside of the ship.

Verdant Works

Really well presented museum about the jute trade in Dundee. ( It was once known as Jutopolis) This really does not sound an interesting topic but it was! The museum brought everything to life including some fascinating social history about how in the 19th century, it was the women who were the main breadwinners in Dundee and the men who stayed home and minded the ‘bairns’.
