Folkestone revived

Folkestone

Folkestone is coming to life again. With art works and gardens, I hope this is a new beginning for a traditional seaside town, that has its fair share of deprivation. My cover pic is of the superb Antony Gormley statue under the Harbour Arm.

On the newly refurbished Harbour Arm is The Big Greek bus, a fun place to eat. Good quality, tasty Greek food. Light lunches, generous portions. We ended up with more food than we could eat!

Road of Remembrance

Folkestone, United Kingdom • Recommendation •

In World War one, Folkestone was the embarkation point for thousand and thousands of young servicemen who went to their deaths in Northern France. Folkestone remembers them in a variety of ways including the Road Of Remembrance down which they marched to the waiting boats in the port below

Fresh fresh seafood from this extremely popular kiosk in Folkestone harbour. Adjacent are fountains in which children ( or adults ) are encouraged to get wet! Tried their scallop and bacon roll ... exceptionally good.

The Folkestone Mermaid

Folkestone, United Kingdom • Recommendation •

One of many brilliant art works in Folkestone. On Sunny Sands beach, this statue by Cornelia Parker is Folkestone’s answer to Copenhagen . Folkestone hosts a triennial art festival and some of the art works stay in the town, this building up quite a display.

Folkestone, United Kingdom • Recommendation •

The Leas is a lovely cliff top walk above the sea at Folkestone. The numbered stones pictured are an art work commemorating the fallen of World War One. Head down the zig zag path to the Country Park below or further down to the promenade and beach.

This is one of several quirky restaurants on The Harbour Arm. You can eat outside or, what looks like fun, in your own private railway carriage with superb views across the water. Another one for the wish list

Mermaids Cafe

Folkestone, United Kingdom • Recommendation •

Walk through the Lower Leas Country Park or along the Promenade to the Mermaid Cafe which overlooks this beach. Note the formation of the breakwater. Fabulous situation and a handy transparent screen allows you to sit outdoors sheltered from the wind. Light snacks and drinks.

Lower Leas Coastal Park

1 save

Folkestone, United Kingdom • Recommendation •

I love the Lower Leas Country Park. Originally created in Victorian times, it was allowed to deteriorate in the late 20th century but is now once again a beautiful and well kept place. Lovely sea views, natural style landscaping, brilliant adventure playground, interesting and thoughtful sculptures and memorials.
