Hull
Not an obvious place for a holiday, I know, but we will see what three nights in Hull has to offer! More likely to see puffins in Flamborough Head than Hull itself! Update Hull is a great city with very interesting historic buildings , a great waterfront and (today) much sunshine.
Update .. a good quality municipal art gallery with galleries devoted to Dutch art, Baroque art, Georgian art, 19 th century art and modern art. Free to enter as are all museums in Hull, which seems to have a progressive local council
Queen Victoria Square, Carr Lane, Hull, United Kingdom
To see the puffins... Magnificent coastal walk Hundreds and hundreds of guillemots and kittiwakes and even I (not a bird watcher, known as a twitcher in England ) spotted three puffins.
Bridlington, United Kingdom
Home of most important 19th century anti slavery campaigner, William Wilberforce. Historic house with thoughtful, well presented, accessible information. Free to enter. Pleasant little garden to sit after absorbing some pretty unpalatable information in the house.
23-25 High Street, Hull, United Kingdom
This fish and chip shop won the award as best fish and chip shop in Britain. I think there are 4 linked shops, the one I went to in Willerby, one in Hull itself and one each in Scarborough and Gainsborough. Excellent quality, large large portions and extraordinarily reasonable cost. Fish and chips is a must do in England but sadly not all fish and chip shops are as good as this one!
Great Gutter Ln, Willerby HU10 6DP, UK
The name makes it sound small but the Potting Shed is large and airy with a nice garden overlooking playing fields. We enjoyed 2 for 1 cocktails on a hot summers evening and a tasty meal of lamb kebabs on flatbreads. Very friendly staff. And on Monday nights a quiz, which we won! NB This establishment is in Beverley not Hull itself
Flemingate, Beverley HU17 0NU, UK
Excellent free museum in Hull. Charts history of Yorkshire and the East Riding from prehistoric times. All artefacts are local finds. Museum is surprisingly large and high quality. Good Roman stuff.
36 High St, Hull HU1 1NQ, UK
When it was built in 1981 it was I believe the world’s longest single span suspension bridge. Still an awe inspiring feat. Great views from Hessle shoreline ( park car for free and stroll through woodland to it) or you can walk, cycle or drive over it.
