Football and Shakespeare
Well I guess it helps to be a football ( soccer ) fan but Aston Villa has an excellent stadium with good views of the action. Claret and blue everywhere. Greatly improved over the years eg now plentiful ladies’ loos. Arrive early to park in nearby streets.

Art gallery in beautiful setting. Very good permanent collection and also high quality temporary ones. eg Canaletto in London and Martin Parr photography were both brilliant. Going shortly to see ‘Painting and Childhood’ Combine with a visit to Stratford Upon Avon, though you will need a car to travel in between.

Good restaurants in Stratford are hard to find. Too touristy. But Lambs is good. Recommend their pre theatre set menu.
12 Sheep St, Stratford-upon-Avon CV37 6EF, UK
A reliable choice for an economical stay in Stratford upon Avon. I prefer it to the central Premier Inn as if you are lucky, you get a nice canal view and the parking is better. You can also very easily walk into the town. 10 mins to Shakespeare’s birthplace, a further 5 mins to the theatres. For details of the theatres, see Louise’s favourite theatres, separate list.
The Waterways, Birmingham Rd, Stratford-upon-Avon CV37 0AW, UK
A high quality choice for breakfast in Stratford upon Avon, in the very street where Shakespeare was born. Go for the full English with included hot drink, well cooked and well presented. ( I like the little milk bottles ) There are other options but in this place I feel one should be traditional.

This hotel is in Solihull not Birmingham but as Solihull is much nicer to stay in, that is fine by me. It is brilliantly located in Solihull town centre and has free parking. It used to be called The George and is still known as such locally. The second picture is of the bowling green which is scenically positioned in a sort of inner courtyard. The dining room looks on to it. It is also a bargain price. Nearly all rooms have been refurbished. If you get an older one , ask for an upgrade. Perfect for visits to Birmingham or Stratford.
