The mostly intact city walls surround the historic old town of Cartegena. The narrow streets are full of picture postcard perfect colorful houses and churches as well as numerous cafes, boutiques, hotels and restaurants. Cartagena is a lot more expensive than other cities in Colombia for hotels, especially in the old town, but this hotel offers large, albeit basic rooms right in the heart of the old town for around $65/night. Free WiFi and coffee. Not all rooms have windows, but there’s a nice common area so it doesn’t feel too claustrophobic.

Set up by three Australians, they offer lots of tasty and health breakfast and lunch options, including the Millennial’s favorite, avocado toast! The cold-brew coffee is also good.
