Living The Italian Slow Life

Como

Wedged between Lake Como and Lake Lugano lies 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗴𝗶𝗼 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘆, where dozens of sleepy villages nestle among the mountains. Sitting in the shadow of more notorious Como and Clooney-inhabited towns, this area hardly ever makes the cut on foreign bucket lists. But you will never know the taste of true Northern Italian countryside life until you venture out this far. Lemi 𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗽𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝘀𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀, 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘆, 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱!

With a population of almost 5000 souls, 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗲𝘇𝘇𝗮 is the hip and happening this side of the valley. The colours of 𝗟𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗟𝘂𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗼 change with the seasons and with the weather. Peachy at dawn and painted in scarlet at sunset. Vibrant in greens in the summer haze. Shrouded in mist on early autumn mornings. Steel-blue under a cloudless midwinter sky. 𝗞𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘇𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁 𝗯𝗮𝗿𝘀, sipping on a glass of local wine, and just enjoy the slow life under a vault of sparkling stars.

L'incontro Ristorante & Pizzeria

When I'm back in Porlezza, Lorenzo's restaurant is where you will find me on most days. Be it on a date, a pizza night with friends or a birthday party, 𝗟'𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼 can accommodate them all. The weekday 𝘮𝘦𝘯ù 𝘥𝘦𝘭 𝘨𝘪𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘰 or lunch set, which rotates daily, is a favourite with the local working crowd (or with people like me, too lazy to cook 😋). It will leave you with a happy tummy and a happy wallet. The 𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘂' is simply heavenly. Try it, trust me, I'm known to be both a tiramisù fan and pretty picky about it, and this is still the best I've ever eaten (sorry grandma). You can check on their Facebook page what they will be serving on that day: https://m.facebook.com/Ristorante-Pizzeria-Lincontro-367520707242038/?__tn__=kCH-R&eid=ARDd9Wv1zrnEL2wmH_LZKWPpBuKPzr9AlZ3xfU7-jmFYYKXNA1QBChdAZb2mhM4YwMIBDNqbf_IRfBzS&hc_ref=ARRD2WwhfdYHaMpnAtd-ax8IPB0UKQcHozI6xcNq6QBSVF72Mzm9tenCFdzfI2WO69Q&fref=nf&__xts__

Il Ritrovo

With a name that translates as 𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘰𝘶𝘵, 𝗜𝗹 𝗥𝗶𝘁𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗼 is a favourite among locals and tourists alike. While they are famous for their delicious seafood and off-the-grill dishes, their seasonal specialties are the real icing on the cake. The chefs blend local and international flavours into unexpected combinations that will leave your eyes and tastebuds pleasantly surprised. Having said that, my favourite dish is the 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗶 𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗼 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶: prawns, pineapple and strawberry (yes, strawberry!) served over a bed of rice and slathered in lip-smacking curry sauce. Do save space for dessert, trust me it will be worth it. A special mention goes to the location too. Take a break between courses with a stroll through the garden and catch some sun right on the waterfront! 💬 Italian, English, German. https://www.ritrovoristorante.it/

Carlazzo

2 saves

Como, Italy • Recommendation •

If you head up the mountain to take in some stunning views of Porlezza, you'll reach the unassuming village of 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗮𝘇𝘇𝗼. The village itself hugs the slope and spills down into the valley, making it appear bigger than it really is. The valley area that straddles the main street, is more lively and commercial. But it's in the mountain area where you will find the 𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗻, with its preserved buildings and hiking trails snaking through forest and open fields. Carlazzo, just as Porlezza, 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗷𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻. I love taking a stroll on crisp winter mornings, right after a snowfall has blanketed the landscape in blue and white. Those same paths have an attractively eerie quality on autumn afternoons, shrouded in thick fog. Spring and summer are both blissfully green and covered in flowers. Leave the hustle and bustle of the city behind, and soak in the atmosphere of slow country life.

Curious to know how Italians hang out in tiny countryside towns? 𝗙𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗮 𝗕𝗮𝗿 is the real deal, no frills. The local crowd gathers here after work to chat and chill over 𝘢𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘰 served by the friendly owner, Luca. In Carlazzo's old town, the bar also doubles up as landmark, tobacconist, fax machine and bus ticket reseller.

Menaggio

Como, Italy • Recommendation •

𝗠𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗴𝗶𝗼 is probably one of the most famous towns on this list, though not the biggest nor the most populated. As a 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝘂𝗯 it attracts its fair number of tourists every year, and many locals consider it a "city". With breathtaking lake views and a beautifully landscaped waterfront, it has nothing to envy to its bigger brother Como.
