I'm a big fan of outdoor museums, where I'm able to leisurely stroll around picture-perfect towns while still getting the informative side of an actual museum visit. All while never feeling I wasted a beautifully sunny day. Of course, since Hokkaido is a relatively young settlement, the houses here are at most 150 years old, dating back to the early Meiji era days. The 4 represented areas are: the town, the fishing village, the farm village and the mountain village. This museum is huge, and 2 and a half hours of wandering were not enough to tour all the 52 buildings. I really appreciated the reconstruction of the interiors, filled with period furniture, utensils and wax statues. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 👍 Wear shoes which are easy to take off and put on, as you'll be removing them frustratingly often if you plan to enter every building.
